This initiative addresses persistent challenges in some of China's urban wastewater treatment systems, including operational instability, low nitrogen and phosphorus removal efficiency, high operating costs, and relatively extensive management practices. Through systematic research focused on system diagnostics and enhanced nutrient removal, it has successfully tackled key industry-wide problems such as significant influent quality fluctuations, high treatment energy consumption, and low nitrogen and phosphorus removal efficiency. The research outcome was evaluated by a panel of nine experts, including Academician Hou Li'an from the Rocket Force University of Engineering of the PLA, who recognized the overall technical level as "internationally advanced." This achievement was honored with the Second Prize in the 2020 Science and Technology Award of China Circular Economy Association.
